Bridge Deck Cracking. State Highway Administration Research Report
The purpose of the study was to determine the cause or causes of premature cracking in bridge decks constructed in Maryland between 1985 and 1990. Data was collected from 30 bridge decks in an attempt to discover a relationship between bridge deck cracking and design, materials, construction, and/or the environment. Information was gathered from original construction records, shop drawings, lab reports, and the Special Provisions for each bridge deck. Field studies were also conducted to determine the lengths and locations of the cracks and the depth of the reinforcing steel in the bridge deck.
