Shear Strength of Deep Reinforced Concrete Slabs
An investigation was made of the effect of axial force on the shear strength of square, two-way reinforced concrete slabs. Six slabs were tested. A uniform static load was applied by hydraulic pressure. Ultimate loads ranged from 440 psi to 1,720 psi. The experimental technique involved evaluation of the compressive membrane force that developed during testing. The loading apparatus was calibrated to obtain the membrane force. Reasonable estimates were made of the shear strength of slabs by a combination of existing knowledge about the interaction between axial load and bending moment and the reserve shear capacity of deep structural members. An equation is presented for the shear strength of deep, two-way reinforced square slabs. An estimate of the enhanced flexural capacity is made on the basis of the axial load-bending moment interaction diagram. (Author)
