Two hydroelectric dams on the Elwha River in Washington State have blocked access to the majority of the Elwha watershed, adversely affecting the river ecosystem and native anadromous fisheries because neither dam was built with fish passage facilities. The lower dam, the Elwha Dam, 7.9 kilometers (km) from the mouth of the river, was built in 1913 and created the Lake Aldwell reservoir. The Elwha Dam has prevented anadromous salmon and trout from using 130 km of main stem and tributary habitat (NPS 2005). The Glines Canyon Dam, at river kilometer (rkm) 21, was built in 1927 and created the Lake Mills reservoir.
