Slump Loss and Retempering of Superplasticized Concrete
The influence of mix design and material selection on the slump gain and subsequent loss of superplasticized (flowing) concrete was studied. It was determined that the dose of the superplasticizer was the most critical factor and the optimum amount depends on both the admixture type and cement type. An overdose of admixture can lead to severe segregation and bleeding. Suggestions are given for developing superplasticized concretes that will maintain high workabilities until the time of placement without undesirable bleeding. Superplasticized concretes can be satisfactorily air-entrained. Some adjustments may be needed for loss of air after superplasticizing, but if the final air content is within the usual recommended range then the concrete should be frost-resistant.
