Socioeconomic Study of a Proposed Rail-like Rapid Transit System for the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. Staff Report--Los Angeles
A feasibility study of rapid transit has recommended construction of a 100-mile rail-like system for the St. Louis metropolitan area. Before undertaking more detailed planning steps, the authors investigated the experiences of six other cities which have proposed transit systems. Particular attention is focused on the Los Angeles area to identify salient aspects of the community response to rapid transit which can assist in the planning of the St. Louis system. Background information on the Los Angeles area and the Southern California Rapid Transit District is provided along with a discussion of the 1968 bond issue referendum which was defeated. A second section of the report summarizes the results of interviews conducted with eight community leaders. A unique scoring methodology was employed to analyze the survey responses and to identify critical issues. The report concludes with a discussion of how these results can be applied to the St. Louis area to optimize public acceptance of the rapid transit proposal. (Author)
