Closure Fill and Skeleton Powerhouse Units The Dalles Dam, Columbia River, Oregon and Washington: Hydraulic Model Investigations
Four hydraulic models were used to study various problems concerned with river diversion at The Dalles Dam. Water-surface elevations, as determined in a 1:80-scale general model, were used in operation of other models. Preliminary investigations of the size and weight of quarry rock needed for the diversion fill, and studies that led to formulation of criteria for design and placement of fill materials in the closure dam were made in a 1:24-scale flume model. A 1:40-scale model reproduced the river channel upstream and downstream from the closure fill, the eight skeletonized powerhouse units, and an excavated diversion channel from the main river to the skeleton units. An entire skeleton unit and portions of the adjacent intake and tailrace areas were reproduced to a scale ratio of 1.25 within a 5- by 100-ft flume.
