Shake Table Testing of Lightweight Concrete Bridges
This report is the third in a series on the seismic behavior of lightweight concrete bridges. Presented are the results of a series of shake table tests on lightweight concrete bridges. A pair of two column bridge bents were designed and tested on the UCSD shake table and assessments made as to shear and flexural behavior. The test units were constructed at 1/6 scale and included in the first case a conventionally reinforced concrete beam and in the second case a fully prestressed beam. Additionally, the second test unit was repaired after testing using steel jackets in order to assess the reparability of lightweight concrete after a major seismic event. Results indicate a minor reduction in shear strength, flexural strength, and elastic stiffness, while displacement capacity, and energy dissipation are essentially the same for normal weight concrete. There appeared to be no adverse behavior due to the dynamic loading of the two column bridge support.
