Excavations at Harmony Borax Works: Historical Archeology at Death Valley National Monument
The report gives details of excavations at Harmony Borax Works, Death Valley National Monument, California. Harmony was the central feature in the opening of Death Valley. During the 1880s, 20-mule teams hauled borax from Harmony to the rail head at Mojave. At present the Borax works consists of a four-level ruin situated against a hillside. Remaining above ground are ruined buildings, tanks, pipes, and waste tailings. A nearby townsite contains remnants of buildings and refuse dumps. The purpose of research was to provide clearance for ruins stabilization. Surface and below-ground features likely to be disturbed by stabilization were recorded, and surface artifact collections were made for comparative purposes. The research design centered on reconstruction of the manufacturing process, on trade and communication, and on interaction of Chinese workers and non-Chinese at the site.
