Investigation of Bridge Abutment Scour
Experiments and three-dimensional numerical modeling have been conducted to study abutment scour in cohesive soil. The bridge crossing of the SC-97 highway over the Turkey Creek in Chester County, South Carolina has been selected for the study. An undisturbed field sample from the floodplain near the right abutment of this bridge has been collected and tested in a laboratory flume for erosion resistance. The critical shear stress necessary for mass erosion has been determined from the laboratory test. Information on the bridge geometry, flood flow, and scour has been obtained from a previous field study conducted by the United States Geological Survey. Using the information as boundary conditions, the three-dimensional flow field in the bridge crossing has been simulated for a 100-year flood. Model results show that due to flow contraction, acceleration of flow and large bed shear stress occurs near the abutment.
