Aldo Leopold Shack Historic Structure Report for the Aldo Leopold Foundation, Inc
Despite its diminutive size and unremarkable construction using commonplace materials, the Aldo Leopold Shack is a very uncommon, and in fact, unique structure. The relationship forged by Aldo Leopold between the building, the land, his work and his eventual significance within the science, philosophy and practice of conservation in the United States, is exclusive to that time and place. Like the trees Leopold planted at the site, the Shack has grown more significant with the years. While subtle changes in the Shacks appearance and composition have taken place, these changes have been organic, in both the architectural and the biological sense, in that they have been reasonable responses to deterioration or damage. The Shacks context has also altered since Leopolds arrival at the site. The changes to the land, instigated by Leopold himself, relate directly to the significance of the Shack site, and to his work. Despite, and in some cases, because of the changes that have taken place, the connection between the Shack and the legacy of Aldo Leopold has remained strong.
