Overlay Design and Reflection Cracking Analysis for Flexible Pavements
The report is a review and evaluation of existing flexible pavement overlay design procedures resulting in two methods for the design of flexible overlay of flexible pavements. The first method is based on the utilization of Dynaflect maximum deflection (DMD) or the surface curvature index. The second method, based on mechanistic response parameters, relies on two distress criteria: fatigue cracking and excessive rutting. The existing pavement is evaluated using the Dynaflect. The design methods developed in the report have been compared against overlay design methods used by three other agencies. Limited comparisons show that the proposed procedure results in overlay thickness consistent with local methods. A limited field study has been undertaken to investigate remedial measures for reflection cracking.
