A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This report describes a preliminary investigation into the energy requirements for house construction in New Zealand. Estimates have been made of the direct energy requirements for house construction, the energy used in the manufacture and transport of construction materials, and the energy embodied in imported materials. A preliminary set of energy coefficients for a range of building materials is put forward, and comparison made with overseas data of this type. The direct and indirect energy involved in constructing a standard New Zealand timber framed house is calculated, and compared with anticipated operating energy requirements. The effect of using alternative building materials is also investigated, together with the energy needed for building maintenance.
