Post-Buckling Behaviour of Elastic Circular Arches
Three circular, pin-based arches have been subjected to accurate, second-order elastic analyses in order to study their postbuckling behaviour. Two low rise arches and one of full semi-circular shape have been studied using a discrete element technique previously developed for the numerical analysis of beam-columns. Under central point loading, the low rise arches exhibited unstable post-buckling responses whereas that of the semicircular arch was found to be stable. Each arch was analyzed also for the case where the load was displaced slightly from the central position. The resulting load-deformation curves are helpful in understanding the nature of equilibrium bifurcation in arches. In the process, the discrete element method is confirmed as a powerful and practicable method for the analysis of arches of any shape and under any loading conditions.
