Minute Man National Historical Park, Massachusetts. Historic Structure Report. A Comparative Study, Ephraim Hartwell Tavern
National Park Service historical architects requested this study on the uses of eighteenth-century New England taverns. They could not otherwise interpret structural evidence found in the Ephraim Hartwell House in Lincoln, MA. In an effort to determine how a home might have served as a tavern, the author consulted and quotes personal diaries, county court and tax records, applications for tavern licenses, and provincial laws. The lack of information specifically on the Hartwell House makes this a comparative study. The author also discusses the social role of taverns. The accompanying appendix includes copies of some primary sources and is followed by a bibliographic essay.
