Stoichiometric Composition of Whitlockite
The mineral whitlockite has been described as having Ca/P ratios of 3:2 and 10:7. This study used the pyrolytic formation of pyro-phosphate and whitlockite from calcium orthophosphates and their mixtures with CaCO3 to determine this Ca/P ratio. Its mean value of 1.506 plus or minus 0.015 indicated a formula of Ca3(PO4)2. It is well known from X-ray studies that the mineral whitlockite is identical with the salt known as beta-tricalcium phosphate, beta-Ca3(PO4)2. It is a material of biologic significance as a constituent of dental calculus, carious regions of the teeth, and urinary tract concretions. However, arguments have been presented for a molar calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 10:7 and have raised doubts regarding the exact stoichiometry of whitlockite. These doubts have limited the development of chemical models for those biochemical processes in which whitlockite is a product or reactant.
