A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Recent developments in the use of plastics by the building industry are reviewed. Current National Building Research Institute research and development work is discussed with particular reference to reinforced acrylic-emulsion based roof waterproofing, rigid PVC window frames, hot water piping systems produced from chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polybutylene and cross-linked polyethylene, as well as foamed insulation and plastics sanitary ware. It is envisaged that in future more plastics will be used in solar energy applications, exterior cladding, thermal insulation and interior fixtures. Conclusions are drawn that plastics already perform many essential functions in the building industry and that they offer architects and engineers scope for innovative design in a wide range of applications.
