A test section of approximately 2300 ft. of IBC Mark VII median barrier was monitored for a period of three years. Construction of the barrier was covered in a previously published report. In a limited number of documented accidents, the IBC median barrier performed well, however, repair costs have been excessive in the two repairs completed to date. The limited number of accidents occurring in the test sections prevents any conclusions as to the relative safety performance of the IBC median barrier compared with the w-beam or New Jersey type concrete barrier. It is recommended that unless the costs of IBC Mark VII barrier go down substantially, that the barrier not be adopted as a standard median barrier for use in Colorado. The IBC barrier may prove to have additional safety performance that could warrant its use in high-hazard locations, but proof of the will need to be documented on a larger scale before further installations would be recommended.
