Capping of Dredged Material Disposal Management for New York Harbor
Monitoring studies consisted of: a comparison of the physical and chemical characteristics of the sediment dredged from each project, an evaluation of the short- and long-term stability of the cap, and an investigation to quantify contaminant release through the cap using biological monitors. Study results indicate that capping of contaminated sediments is a feasible mitigation measure. In addition, information is presented on a proposed study to investigate the use of depressions in the bottom of the harbor formed by sand mining for the disposal of dredged material with subsequent capping.
