Experimental Paved Shoulders on Frost Susceptible Soils
Approximately 4 miles of I-80 east of Joliet, Illinois were constructed in 1967 with experimental shoulder sections. The mainline pavement is 8 in. CRCP on 4 in. of subbase which extends 18 in. into the shoulders. A 4 in. layer of open-graded shoulder subbase abuts the pavement subbase and extends through the shoulder. The shoulders are underlaid by portland cement (CAM), pozzolan-lime (PAM), and bituminous (BAM) stabilized aggregate base courses. PCC shoulders were also evaluated and a comparison was made of the behavior of sealed and unsealed longitudinal shoulder joints. The experiment, design, materials, alignment, construction, instrumentation, difficulties encountered, frost heave, crack patterns, distress and other detailed information is presented. (BPR abstract)
