A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The investigation of the Centerville Site (S 332), Illinois was undertaken by personnel from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in response to the planned Corps of Engineers' Blue Waters Ditch Project. The site was occupied during both Middle Woodland and Mississippian intervals. The authors estimate the dates of occupation from 500 B.C. to A.D. 500 and from 900 to A.D. 1050. Largely based on the absence of grinding it was concluded that the site served as a large seasonal hunting camp during Middle Woodland times. During Mississippian times the economy was based on intensive horticulture. This interpretation is based on the recovery of a number of stone hoes and maize remains. A rectangular single-post pit house was discovered in association with the Mississippian artifacts.
