Cooperative Marine Piling Investigation - Phase III. Inspection after Four Years Exposure
The Cooperative Piling Committee and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command exposed 54 specially treated piles at Coco Solo Annex, Rodman Naval Station, Canal Zone, and 66 piles at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1963. In November 1966, after 3-1/2 years of exposure, the piles at Pearl Harbor were still undamaged by marine borers. In March 1967, after 4 years of exposure, 8 of the 54 piles at Coco Solo have been attacked by Limnoria and one was also attacked by Martesia. All of the attacked piles were impregnated with essentially creosote or creosote-coal tar solutions. None of the double-treated piles showed any evidence of borer attack. (Author)
