Substandard Materials for Pavement Construction
If local, substandard materials can be used in pavements in place of more expensive conventional materials; considerable economic savings are sometimes possible. However, these substandard materials are often difficult to evaluate and may invalidate common pavement design assumptions. Also, these materials may adversely affect the pavement performance. Some specific pavement problem due to poorly graded and uncrushed aggregate in asphalt concrete, cohesive fines in aggregates, dune sands and coastal deposits, shales, laterite gravels, and duricrusts are reviewed in this paper. These substandard materials may also require adjustments in construction procedures to accommodate their characteristics. The economics of using substandard materials in pavements must be balanced against the additional potential difficulties of adequately evaluating the materials, designing to account for their characteristics, and adjusting construction procedures for them.
