Nonresidential Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (NRECS), 1979-80
The Nonresidential Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (NBECS) was designed to provide information related to energy consumption in nonresidential buildings, primarily those in the commercial sector. A representative sample of all nonresidential buildings in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia was selected using a multistage area probability technique, supplemented by a list of large buildings. Data concerning characteristics of the building structure, activities in the building, heating and air conditioning equipment and energy sources and end uses were collected in personal interviews with building owners or managers. Fieldwork for the NBECS was initiated in October 1979 and continued through January 1980. This data tape consists of 4 files. The first file contains the raw data; this file has 6,222 records, one record for each building. The second file contains full SPSS data definitions; the third file contains COBOL file definition information; and the fourth file contains a TPL (Table Producing Language) codebook.
