Public Health Assessment for Hamilton Island Landfill (USACOE), North Bonneville, Skamania County, Washington, Region 10. CERCLIS No. WA5210890096
Hamilton Island (Skamania County, Washington) is 43 miles east of Portland, Oregon, on the Columbia River. The peninsula referred to as Hamilton Island Landfill was created as a result of the construction of the Bonneville Second Powerhouse and Dam, which began in 1977. An estimated 99.5% of the fill was soil, rock, and gravel excavated during construction of the dam. In addition, waste materials generated during construction, and demolition debris from the original site of North Bonneville, were placed in the landfill. Hamilton Island Landfill was listed on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites because of documented contamination in surface waters entering the Columbia River. ATSDR has placed Hamilton Island Landfill in the category of an indeterminate public health hazard.
