Effect of Different Portland Cements upon the Pozzolanicity of Pulverized-Fuel Ashes and the Strength of Blended Cement Mortars
Tests were undertaken to determine the index of pozzolanicity as defined in BS 3892: Part 1: 1982, Pulverized-fuel ash. Part 1: Specification for pulverized-fuel ash for use as a cementitious component in structural concrete. Six ashes from the United Kingdom were used in combination with four different Portland cements at the 30% replacement level. The index was found to rank the ashes in a way which reflected their effect upon the 90 day and 180 day strengths of mortars cured in water at 20C. As the contributions to strength made by the ashes depended upon the Portland cement with which they were used, this index cannot be used to predict long-term strengths.
