Two Centrifuge Model Tests: Earthquakes on Submerged Embankments
Centrifuge tests were carried out on two model submerged embankments to simulate the behavior of the Lower San Fernando Dam which suffered severe earthquake damage in 1971 due to liquefaction of the interior of the dam followed by collapse. Silicon oils were used as the model pore fluids. The model earthquakes were produced using a small 'wheel-on' acceleration pulse followed by the main series of ten equal amplitude sinusoidal pulses and a small 'wheel-off' acceleration pulse. For both models, observed pore pressures always increased when subjected to earthquake stress. Each earthquake caused some cumulative damage and liquefaction was observed in an energy absorbing zone just above the base of the dam.
