Performance of an Embankment on Clay Interstate - 95
The main object of the research is to obtain field data for improving the reliability of methods for predicting deformation and stability of heavy embankments placed over thick deposits of soft soils. This report summarizes progress from July 1, 1968 to June 30, 1969. Construction above the working mat started in July 1968 and reached Elevation + 36 feet by the end of November. After a four month recess, the embankment was completed to Elevation + 40 between April 15 and May 15, 1969. By this time the embankment had settled a maximum of 1.4 feet and a maximum of 48 feet of excess pressure head existed in the middle of the foundation clay. The largest horizontal movement was four inches. The instrumentation generally performed well. The report includes evaluation of methods for predicting initial excess pore pressure caused by the embankment load, pore pressure dissipation, horizontal deformations, settlement rate and amount, and embankment stability.
