Large Scale Exploratory Tests of Sodium/Magnetite Concrete Interactions
Two large-scale tests examing the interaction between molten sodium at 825 K and magnetite concrete were performed. In the first test, bare magnetite concrete was exposed to the sodium and in the second test the concrete was partially protected by a flawed steel liner and a layer of dense silica firebrick. The results demonstrated that energetic chemical reactions can occur between sodium and magnetite concrete. The reaction debris that formed between the steel liner and the concrete caused gross deformation of the liner as well as extensive cracking of the reinforced concrete.
