Field Evaluations and Guidelines for Rubblization in Texas
Rubblization is a unique means of rehabilitating concrete pavements by in-place conversion of the old concrete pavement into a useable base. Rubblization employs machinery that will break apart the concrete in place and leave pieces small enough that reflective cracking problems are significantly reduced or ideally eliminated. This report builds upon the previously published report 4687-1. This report presents a summary of several field investigations performed to evaluate projects suitability for rubblization followed by construction and performance evaluations of two recently completed rubblization projects. Based on these experiences, this report presents a non-invasive field test procedure to evaluate projects, recommended thickness design procedures for rubblization projects, and a construction specification for conducting rubblization in Texas.
