Bracing of Timber Roof Trusses (Part 1)
The National Timber Research Institute in collaboration with the Truss Plate Association of Southern Africa and the South African Bureau of Standards, carried out tests on rafter bracing systems for cement tiled roofs. A portion of a full sized roof was built and tested with various types of rafter bracing at the SABS laboratory in Pretoria. The following items were explored: The effect of the vertical load and rafter eccentricity on the laterally induced forces; The effect of the out of plumbness of trusses; The forces present in a conventional South African bracing system with different stiffnesses in the connections.
