This publication presents a review of sustainable development indicators, summarizes the main results of the European TISSUE research project and introduces the VTT draft proposal for sustainable development criteria for target setting in urban design. The review of sustainable development indicators summarizes the definitions of sustainable development indicators and presents suggested contents, discusses purposes of use and considers the possibilities to adopt these indicators for monitoring and target setting of urban environments. The summary of the TISSUE research project presents the main outcomes from the European 6th FP project Trends and indicators for monitoring the EU thematic strategy on sustainable development of urban environment (TISSUE). TISSUE formulated the European proposal for sustainability indicators for monitoring urban environments. The main focuses were sustainable urban transport, sustainable construction, sustainable design, sustainable management and sustainable urban environment. The purpose of VTT's draft proposal for sustainable urban criteria is to support target setting. The draft proposal differs from the TISSUE indicators in such a way that the purpose of use is target setting instead of monitoring, the viewpoint is narrower concentrating on built environment instead of overall urban aspects and the VTT's proposal allowed the considering of national emphasis. However, the VTT's proposal makes use of the TISSUE results. In addition, the proposal makes use of other recent results from European and national research projects, which have studied sustainability indicators of built environment.
