Procedures for the design of road embankments are presented in the study. Embankment design is viewed as a process consisting of a number of stages of increasing sophistication regarding both investigation and analysis. The document deals with the routine or simple methods which should be employed in the earlier stages. More complex cases require specialist geotechnical expertise. Slope stability analysis is often considered to be synonymous with embankment design. In practice, post-construction settlement of road embankments is a much more common, and often more complex, problem. The emphasis is therefore given to settlement estimation.
