Nome Comprehensive Development Plan
Nome, a former 'white man's town' of gold rush fame, today is a predominantly Eskimo community with an economy based heavily in government and tourist activities. At the present time, Nome is in a period of transition in both the social and economic spheres. The City is striving to acculturate its Eskimo citizens as full partners in community life and, at the same time, is attempting to stimulate the economic development of the Northwest region as a means of upgrading the standard of living of all of its residents. In this plan are background studies of Nome's physical setting, its history, economy and population, land use, community facilities and transportation systems. To accommodate the City's most probable forecasted population, the future needs for various land uses and community services have been outlined and a plan developed to accommodate those needs. Detailed project planning for implementing the short run recommendations contained with this plan is included in an accompanying Capital Improvements Program (PB185011). (Author)
