The US National Committee on Tunneling Technology (USNC/TT), a unit of the Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems, was formed within the National Research Council in 1972 by the presidents of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. It was formed in response to a request from the chairman of the Federal Council for Science and Technology for a U.S. focal agency to be responsible for assessment of tunneling activities, and where appropriate, for stimulation of improvements in tunneling technology.
