Clays of different sensitivity can occur in the same stratum within a few metres of each other. Comparisons of the ion contents of clays from two widely separated areas show that the shear strength of clay is closely connected with the content of calcium and magnesium in the pore water. This was later verified by laboratory experiments to study the effect of the addition of different salts on the geotechnical properties of clays. Further laboratory experiments concerned the spreading of calcium chloride in different clays by diffusion and electroinjection. A considerable increase in shear strength resulted. Finally, field trials were made in four different areas with three methods of introducing calcium chloride in to loose clays to increase their shear strength, namely introduction of salt plugs, injection of the concentrated solution and electroinjection.
