Asphalt Cement Viscosity and Penetration
The report surveys the asphalt cements supplied to New York State during 1968, comparing penetration to viscosity. The advantages and disadvantages of viscosity grading are examined. Over 200 samples of 85-100 penetration grade asphalt were tested to establish the relationship between viscosity and penetration as it exists in the state's ten districts. It was found that although penetration is quite uniform, viscosities of asphalt cements in the eastern portion of the state average 50% higher than in the west; however, some overlap of the two types exists in the central portion of the state which could lead to construction difficulties.
