Performance of Tunnel-Boring Machines in Rock
The report is an analysis of performance data from 65 rock tunnels in which full-face tunnel-boring machines were used. The tunnels were constructed on 31 projects in ten countries: Australia, South Africa, USA and seven countries of Western Europe. The performance of both the machines and the overall systems of tunnelling are examined in relation to the type and size of tunnel, the ground conditions, the machine characteristics, the management policies and relative costs. In indicating where improvements are needed, the report first demonstrates the current potential of full-face machine tunnelling in rock (in terms of overall advance rate or progress). This leads on to an examination of the feasibility of faster tunnelling using tunnel-boring machines--the concept of rapid-advance tunnelling--in the context of these techniques being applied to the creation of underground space as well as to the many purposes of tunnels.
