The Hudson Valley estate of Lindenwald served as the home of Martin Van Buren between the years of 1839 and 1862. Since the construction of the mansion in 1797, the estate has had sixteen different ownerships which has resulted in various structural and landscape modifications of the property. In 1973 a 12.8 acre parcel of the estate was designated the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site by an act of Congress. The National Park Service which is responsible for the maintainance and management of this National Historic Site, has initiated a program for the renovation of the mansion and the restoration of the estate grounds.
