Hypoxia-Induced Respiratory Changes in English Sole ('Parophrys vetulus Girard')
Laboratory measurements were made of ventilation volume, ventilation rate, oxygen consumption rate, and oxygen uptake efficiency of English sole (Parophrys vetulus) subjected to a range of oxygen concentrations in seawater. Oxygen consumption was constant over various oxygen concentrations, and no critical oxygen tension was found. As oxygen concentrations decreased, ventilation volume and ventilation rate increased, and the efficiency of oxygen extraction decreased (from 73 to 58% of oxygen extracted from ventilation stream). Results suggest a moderate degree of hypoxic tolerance in English sole.
