Pillar Creek to Monashka Creek, Project S-0391(2), Kodiak Island, Alaska
The primary purpose of this project is to provide an all-weather access road to the watershed of Monashka Creek, where the City of Kodiak will construct a water supply reservoir to supplement the inadequate existing reservoir at Pillar Creek. An added purpose is to provide more recreational areas for the city of Kodiak and eventual connection to the communities to the north. The proposed project will provide a two-lane gravel roadway 3.7 miles in length from Pillar Creek to Monashka Creek. The major negative impact is the conversion of approximately 50 acres of wilderness into a roadway. Erosion and pollution controls for the roadway and structure construction will be an integral part of the contract; hence, there is no harm anticipated to the salmon fishery in Pillar, Virginia and Monashka Creeks.
