Bailey Method for Gradation Selection in Hot-Mix Asphalt Mixture Design
This Circular is a synopsis of current information on the Bailey Method, a systematic approach to selecting and adjusting aggregate gradation in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) design. Originally developed by Robert Bailey (retired) of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the method advocates a strong aggregate skeleton for rut resistance along with adequate voids in mineral aggregate for good durability. The method has been used by District 5 of the IDOT since the early 1980s, and in the 1990s IDOT promoted the use of the method throughout the state. Two Transportation Research Board Committees-Committee on Characteristics of Bituminous-Aggregate Combinations to Meet Surface Requirements and Committee on Characteristics of Bituminous Paving Mixtures to Meet Structural Requirements - were asked to review the information presented by the authors. The committees agreed that it should be of interest to materials and pavement engineers and others responsible for designing HMA pavements.
