Fracture Properties of Nodular Iron Castings, Grade 80-55-06
The fracture mechanics properties of nodular iron, grade 80-55-06, were studied. The mechanical properties of the material were determined. Fracture toughness tests were conducted on 1-inch thick compact tension specimens and a conditional fracture toughness, K sub Q, was determined. Thirteen fatigue crack-growth tests were conducted and the results plotted on log-log graphs. The dependence of the fatigue crack growth rate, da/dN, on stress intensity factor range, delta K, was determined for stress ratios of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7. Numerous scanning electron micrographs were made showing various features of the fatigue fracture surface.
