Strengthening Bridges Using Composite Materials
The objective of this research project is to outline methodologies for using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites to strengthen and rehabilitate reinforced concrete bridge elements. Infrastructure deterioration and bridge strengthening techniques using FRP materials are discussed as background. Properties and classifications of different reinforcing fibers and resin matrices are provided, along with the mechanical properties of the FRP composites. Basic concepts and design principles for composite FRP materials are introduced, and topics such as manufacturing processes, anisotropic elasticity, strength of anisotropic materials, and micro-mechanics are presented.
