Constructing New VA Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, Unjustified
The Chairman of the Subcommittee on HUD-Independent Agencies, Senate Committee on Appropriations, asked GAO to review VA's plans to build a new hospital in Camden, New Jersey. GAO believes that VA's assumptions used to justify the hospital were not valid. Estimated construction costs were $75.3 million and annual operating costs were estimated to be about $32 million. In its fiscal year 1979 budget submission to the Congress, VA proposed that plans for the new hospital be eliminated. It plans, instead, to build both an outpatient clinic in Camden and a nursing home in Philadelphia.
