Computing Minimum Cost Fire Protection
Presented here is a computational method of protecting a facility from accidental fire. If certain sets of equipment are known to be critical, in the sense that destruction by fire of any of these sets can lead to disastrous consequences, then this method can be used to identify specific areas and barriers for increased fire protection with the result that no single-source fire can spread to and destroy any of the critical sets of equipment. Moreover, these areas and barriers may be chosen so as to minimize the total cost of fire protection. As an alternative, the method can also be used to maximize the probability of fire protection.
