A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Seventy-seven housing and health facilities for the aged, reflecting social attitudes and architectural concepts in the United States, Canada, and Europe, are described and illustrated in photographs. Each project serves a special need within a particular environment, e.g., a low-income housing project in a midwestern city, a geriatric hospital in Italy, a church-sponsored community for the elderly in Florida, a high-rise apartment house and infirmary in New York. Preceding the project descriptions is a discussion of types of facilities for the elderly, sources of funds for these facilities, planning and implementing a project to house and / or care for the elderly, general design considerations in planning a skilled nursing home, and recommended architectural standards for a skilled nursing home. The project descriptions include examples of residential housing, combined residence and nursing facilities, foreign residential and nursing care facilities, and nursing homes. Each description includes a site plan, floor plans for individual units, and a brief narrative account of the project. Each project's architect, capacity, construction cost, and sponsor are noted. Federal prototypes for nursing homes, including recommended floor plans, typical room layouts, and recommended equipment and furnishings, are described and illustrated. A bibliography is provided.
