Use of Precast, Prestressed Concrete for Bridge Decks
A structural deck system composed of precast and prestressed concrete sections of a size permitting over-the-highway transportation was conceived; structural design calculations conforming to standard specifications were made for the deck supported by steel beams spaced at the maximum anticipated prototype beam spacing. Specific areas of investigation included the slab tie-down system, the transverse continuity joint, the post-tensioning system, joint materials for waterproofing and reduction of stress concentration, and static and repeated load testing of full-scale specimens.
