Estimation of Traffic for Road Pavement Design. Proceedings of a Seminar Held at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne, 23 March 1981
As the structural design of a road is basically related to the vehicles it will carry, traffic forecasts are necessary. Inaccuracies in estimating will lead either to a need for premature maintenance or over-design. Traffic flow is thus a major input to road pavement design, and consequently a comprehensive study is necessary. This conference provided a forum for discussion of relevant aspects. Papers presented were: Commercial vehicles and pavement damage; Problems with present methods used to estimate standard axles; a County Surveyor's viewpoint; Equipment and techniques for commercial vehicle axle load survey in the United Kingdom; Estimation of cumulative standard axles for pavement design and structural maintenance; Using a survey of commercial vehicle movements as a basis for pavement design; The relationship between goods movement and road damage.
