This 1981 Annual Housing Survey for the Boston, Mass., standard metropolitan statistical area provides data on the size and composition of the housing inventory, the characteristics of its occupants, the changes in the inventory resulting from new construction and from losses, the indicators of housing and neighborhood quality, and the characteristics of recent movers. Tabular data on general housing characteristics cover selected housing characteristics for the general population as well as for black and Hispanic households for 1981, 1977, 1974, and 1970; characteristics of new construction units; 1977 characteristics of housing units removed from the housing inventory; and characteristics of vacant - year - round housing units. Data on indicators of housing and neighborhood quality address characteristics for owner - occupied and renter - occupied housing units and characteristics for owner - occupied and renter - occupied housing units with black and Hispanic householders. Data on financial characteristics encompass characteristics of owner - occupied and renter - occupied housing units by income of the family or primary individual; characteristics for owner - occupied, one - unit structures by value of property; and characteristics of renter - occupied housing units by gross rent. Tables on recent mover households present characteristics of all occupied housing units and units occupied by recent movers; income of families and primary individuals by purchase price and amount of mortgage; and characteristics of the present unit for recent - mover households cross - classified by characteristics of the previous unit. The final section of tables shows cross - tabulations of the indicators of housing and neighborhood quality by income, value, and gross rent.
