Seismological Methods for Measuring Shallow Jointed Rocks
There is a strong need for an instrument to record shallow jointed rocks in mining and underground construction. A theory of wave propagation in shallow jointed rocks is presented where elastic waves are propagating around the tip of an open joint. From known intercept times, wave velocities and joint spacing the depth of a shallow joint is determined. A comparison between the new theory and the theory of seismic refraction is presented. The theory has been verified by model experiments of artificial joints in concrete blocks. Results from experiments on blocks with two and twenty open joints are discussed. Field tests have been made in an open pit and an underground mine. A new pulse exciter for generation of P- and S-waves is described. The depth of jointing is determined by means of field observations on the ground or in bore holes and the results confirm the theory. (Atomindex citation 09:405350)
